What is in the US agreement with the Taliban to withdraw from Afghanistan?

After the withdrawal of international forces, the Taliban occupied Afghanistan and took control of all the towns. Why did the US agree to leave after twenty years of fighting?

NATO expelled the Taliban from Kabul after the 9/11 events in 2001.

But twenty years later, the Taliban, an Islamist extremist organization, has re-entered the Afghan capital. They take selfies at the Chancellery. They have brought the country under their control.

This situation was not caused by a terrible military defeat, but by a peace deal.

Why did the US make a deal with the Taliban?

The day after the fall of the Twin Towers, then-US President George W. Bush made a promise: "This war is short-lived, but no doubt, we will win."

But the reality is that the United States has never been able to defeat the Taliban militarily.

The Taliban, who had given refuge to al-Qaeda, the mastermind of the 9/11 attacks, were expelled by NATO intervention but re-integrated after many years of service.

By 2004, they were attacking Western armies and the then-Afghan government. Incumbent President Barack Obama augmented the military in 2009 as attacks escalated. The total number of Orthodox troops in Afghanistan rose to 140,000.

Is the US losing the title of superpower due to the defeat of Afghanistan?

Thus the Taliban retreated but it lasted only a short time.

It became America's longest war. At a cost of $ 978 billion and the loss of 2,300 lives, American citizens have called for it to be abandoned.

Soldier casualties have dropped since US forces announced they would only do training and support. "More than 45,000 Afghan soldiers have died in the last five years," Afghan President Ashraf Ghani said in 2019.

In this context, President Donald Trump, who came after Obama, negotiated with the Taliban and signed the agreement in 2020. It was also happily mentioned in that year's presidential election. "We are almost out of Afghanistan. We have been there for 19 years. 

What was mentioned in the contract?

The United States will withdraw all forces from Afghanistan, and the Taliban will ensure that al-Qaeda and other extremist organizations do not operate in areas under their control. The Taliban will release 1,000 Afghan soldiers and the government will release 5,000 Taliban prisoners. Barriers against this system will be removed. This agreement is only between the Taliban and the United States. The Taliban were then told to talk to the Afghan government and decide who would rule the country. Three lakh Afghan soldiers trained at a cost of Rs 88.32 billion will defend the country.

Did both sides keep their promises?

As the Trump-led government came to power, US forces began to withdraw. Taliban talks with the Afghan government took place in September, but no results were reached. Taliban opponents have insisted that the deal does not lie, despite the setbacks.

"This is not Vietnam, nor is the government breaking down," the Afghan president told the BBC in February.

"Looks like a good result"

Incumbent President Joe Biden continued to implement his deal despite conflicts with Trump on all matters. "It is not possible to send another generation of Americans to Afghanistan and wage war in anticipation of another solution. It is not possible for the Taliban to overthrow everyone and control the country," he said.

He seems to be adamant in his decision even after recent events.

Taliban leader Mohammad Abbas Stanikzai made the announcement last September while sitting in a star hotel after signing a deal with one of the world's most powerful armies. To many, that seems to be the case.

US defeat to Afghan Taliban: What are the global consequences?

Political observers have strongly criticized US President Joe Biden's hasty withdrawal of troops from Afghanistan. It is said to be unnecessary and a betrayal of the believers.

The heartbreaking photos from Kabul airport add to these criticisms. Western nations have shed a lot of blood in Afghanistan. Have spent great money over the years. The price paid by the Afghans is even higher than these.

It is very difficult to argue against the criticisms regarding the hasty departure of the Biden administration from Afghanistan. Afghanistan may be a country that cannot really be saved. Its governance structures may be corrupt. But hasn’t all of this happened in the last two years? What has happened in the last twenty years?

Whatever the argument, the sudden departure has cast a great deal of doubt on the credibility of the United States. This is a disgrace to the credibility of the United States as an ally and with the moral right to interfere in world affairs.

Can it be compared to Vietnam?

The evacuation of people by helicopters from a city that is falling to the enemy is inevitable on the front pages of newspapers. What happened then in Vietnam is comparable to what is happening in Afghanistan today. Although there are superficial similarities, there are some important differences.

Afghanistan is not like that. The capital has been captured and the state has fallen before it can be completely expelled. Looking at this, it seems as if the United States was hoping that the Afghan army they had trained would protect the capital for some time to come.

America's respect for Vietnam was diminished. The military commitment was shattered. There was a deep division among the people.

But the Vietnam War was a side event of the Cold War. Despite the slippage there, it was the United States that won the end of the Cold War. The NATO system was not weakened then. The world did not hesitate to seek the help of the United States. The United States continued to be a great power.

Afghanistan is completely different. The divisions within the United States caused by this war can in no way be compared to Vietnam. There is certainly no domestic support for the war being waged in Afghanistan. At the same time, there were no large-scale struggles against the war.

Importantly, today's international environment is dramatically different from it was in the 1970s. Western nations, including the United States, are embroiled in a variety of conflicts and rivalries around the world. In some, they have clearly succeeded. The current slide in Afghanistan is a disaster for the slogan of the war on terror. Yet in the pervasive conflict between democracy and dictatorship, America's defeat can only be seen as a serious setback.

In Moscow and Beijing, there will be at least one miniature for now. The Western model of liberal intervention by the West to establish democracy and the rule of law is disastrous in Afghanistan. No one will be interested in such interventions in the future.

Anxiety for allies

Allied allies feel that they have been badly defeated in the war in Afghanistan. Even British ministers who had a jealous "special relationship" with Washington were openly critical of Biden's hasty decision.

The war has clearly underscored the extent to which European allies depend on the United States. It has also made it clear that the United States is in a position to follow that path without saying anything after taking a decision and moving in its direction.

This is bad news for Western countries. How long will the smile that Anas has in China, Russia, and Pakistan last? Pakistan has been harboring and protecting the Taliban for its own strategic gain.

But if the renewed Taliban rule is to turn the wheel of time, it is a way to stem international terrorism. It will cause regional unrest and have a negative effect on Pakistan.

Smile at the enemies of the West

China is happy with the US defeat. If Biden had decided to leave Afghanistan only to concentrate his actions against China, it would certainly have provided an opportunity for China to expand its influence in Afghanistan and beyond.

But there is also the point where China has to worry. China has a very narrow border with Afghanistan. While there are allegations that China is using repression against Islamists, there is a danger that Islamic groups against Beijing will use Afghanistan as a base. So it is no surprise that China was keen to hold talks with the Taliban.

Russia has a similar concern. One can take comfort in the fact that the United States has suffered the same setback as it did in the 1980s.

But Russia is concerned that the security of its allies, Central Asia, could be threatened. That is why it conducted a war drill on the Tajikistan-Afghan border to prevent casualties from fleeing Afghanistan.

So in the short term, the defeat of the United States in Afghanistan will certainly benefit its adversaries. But their attitude will never change.

What really matters is the changes that take place between America's allies. What will they take from the Afghanistan experience?

Taliban in Afghanistan: US, Russia, China '' Great Game '- - What's going to happen?

 When the Taliban came to power after capturing the city of Kabul, all the neighbors were left wondering what to do next.

 But there is no confusion for China.  The country has announced that it wants friendship with the Taliban.  This is not a decision made today.  A month ago, the head of the Taliban's political wing visited China and met with its leaders.

 The sudden departure of Western forces from its neighboring country will in a way make China happy.  But China has been cautious about filling the void left by the US departure.

 As countries like Russia and the United States, China has never been to Afghanistan and fought.  But shares a border of about 70 km.

 This is the boundary with the shortest length.  Yet it is seen as crucial to China's internal security.  This is because the area borders Xinjiang province.  This is the area inhabited by Weaker Islamists.

 China is concerned that the emergence of a fundamentalist regime near the doorstep could cause trouble domestically.

 Because domestically the problem of vicarious Islamists has always been smoking.  The presence of the Taliban nearby may further complicate this.

 China's state media refer to Afghanistan as the "grave of the superpowers."  An editorial published by China's Global Times says that the United States and the Soviet Union should not follow suit and fall into the abyss.

 For now, it is believed that China will support the Taliban on the basic condition that it will not support the struggles of Weir Islamists.

 The incurable scar on Russia

 Russia has experienced the scars inflicted by fighting the Mujahideen in Afghanistan in the 1980s.  The situation in the Soviet Union is similar to that in the United States today, about 30 years ago.

 In the late 1970s, the United States, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Britain, and Switzerland provided arms to the Mujahideen to prevent the Soviet Union from gaining influence in Afghanistan.

 Unable to resist the armed Mujahideen guerrilla warfare, Soviet Union forces were forced to flee Afghanistan.  More than one lakh people were killed in this war.  More than 50 lakh people became refugees.  This is half the number of refugees worldwide at the time.

 People were trapped in refugee camps with no basic facilities.  It was a pity to have to lie down in small tents and in the clearing.  Tens of thousands of orphaned children grew up in madrassas as unrelated orphans.  When they became young men without any bondage, they raised their arms again.  They are the ones who have been involved in the armed uprising to this day.

 The Taliban are still on the list of banned terrorist organizations in Russia.  Yet the old scars are all but forgotten and today Russia supports the Taliban.  It has also held talks in Kabul.

 As the Russian ambassador has said that the Taliban will rule better than Ashraf Ghani, it is clear that the Taliban will get the whole blessing of the country.

Rising casualties again in Afghanistan

 What is the status of Pakistan?

 Pakistan has been repeatedly accused of supporting the Taliban while US-led coalition forces are in Afghanistan.  But Pakistan has never acknowledged it.

 Pakistan is a refugee camp for refugees displaced by the Soviet Union's war in Afghanistan.  Pakistan backed the Taliban in the early 1990s.  But since then, Iran and Pakistan have had a complicated relationship with the Taliban.

 But as news of the Taliban's arrival in Kabul spread, Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan expressed support for it.  He said the Taliban had broken the chains of slavery.

 America's New Strategy

 Many are concerned that the sudden departure of the United States from Afghanistan is unacceptable.  It has also been criticized as a betrayal of believers.

 He also questions whether the four presidents will spend billions of rupees over 20 years to return to power with the Taliban.

 But US President Joe Biden has given a clear answer to this question in his speech.  He said it was not the US's job to build another country, adding that the war was being waged to prevent a terrorist attack on American soil.

 The United States, which controls air traffic, has said it will help qualified people if they want to leave the country.  It has also said it will help refugees to the tune of about 3.7 trillion rupees.

 As for the United States, it may have moved away from Afghanistan.  But Robert Hannigan of the British intelligence service says it cannot be completely abandoned.

 Hannigan says its history makes us realize that Afghanistan is a country caught between the preferences of these key countries

 "The time has come for the United States to adapt itself to trade with countries such as Russia and China, which are difficult to work with."  He says.

 "The Joe Biden administration is clear that we need to find a way to work with them on important issues, such as climate change and Afghanistan."

 In the 19th century, Britain and Russia clashed in Afghanistan to maintain their influence.  They called it the Great Game.

 That game is a game that still lasts today.  Players have increased.  Western nations may have been exhausted.  But Afghanistan is still important today.
